PROJECT N°1: CENTRAL COURSE
Context
The need for higher education depends on economic growth. In developed and developing economies, the job market needs knowledgeable labor force, because of that it also requires a need for quality education. Besides, the parents in these countries want their children to have a bright future, that they believe is going to be obtained only through quality education. Achieving quality education is not easy for everyone these days. The OECD report states that spreading quality education is very costly for the 36 OECD countries.
As a result, we see Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) as an alternative solution to the costly delivering quality education to larger masses. MOOCs are programs consisting of online courses. Consequently, the only requirement to access their courses is an Internet connection which is the most important reason for this alternative solution because the Internet access is much more affordable than quality education. The vast majority of the world's population now has internet connection, and this rate is increasing very rapidly. According to OECD, the number of internet users increased from 413 million in 2000 to almost 3.4 billion in 2016. As of September 2020 there are nearly 5 billion users. In these regards, considering the high costs to assure ensure quality education for everybody by governments, MOOC is actually the ideal solution to give a high quality education to anyone who wants it. MOOC promotes learning in different fields granting access to anyone regardless of age. The main goal of MOOC is to gather teachers and students from all over the world.
Due to the COVID-19 virus, the popularity of online education has increased a lot and it is now thought that its popularity will remain at the same level even after the virus era is over.
There are many MOOCs to serve students who want to have an access to online education. Our goal is to establish a system to bring these MOOCs together and to provide students with access to courses in MOOCs through a single system. This system gives to students the opportunity to save time and guide students to the most appropriate course regarding their demand.
We would like to finish the creation of the application in about 6 months, and make it available on any smartphone so everybody could use it (compatible with ISO and Android).
Target
There will be two types of people using our platform: the donor and the receiver.
This service is available for anyone who wants training in a learning field without any prerequisites. The two biggest groups addressed by this system are students and workers who want to improve themselves.
The purpose of the service is to gather all MOOCs in one place. The system is for students and workers working on the MOOC. They will want to see all the online courses and training programs offered at MOOCs in one place in a simple way and to quickly see all the courses on the subject of study they want.
MOOCs also have diploma programs for those who wish, those who need a degree in a field of learning can benefit from this service.
Other than students and workers, it can also be interesting for those who want to have a knowledge in any learning field.
Offered Service
We propose a system that will serve those who need to take online courses in different learning fields. We will gather all MOOC providers and we will categorize their courses by subject so that it will provide a simple and understandable collage of their courses. As a result, users will save time. Instead of visiting all online course sites one by one and searching for courses, they will find all the lessons on the subject they want in one place.
Our service is a functional presentation of many courses and MOOD providers on the Internet. It is a service that will allow users to find online courses in their desired learning field, then they will be redirected to the MOOC provider where these courses are located.
This service will also enable them to work more effectively. By browsing through MOOC sites one by one, users can be tired and they may overlook more useful lessons in their field. Our service eliminates this risk. In summary, our system will save users time and enable them to take the most appropriate course for their learning field.
Identify
Web Interface
We want to create a mobile application running on iOS and Android for this project, so that many people could use the platform.
The home page of the application will present categories related to the main learning fields (such as mathematics, languages, finance, web designing etc.). Users will choose one of these categories that interest them, then they will be redirected to another page.
The second page will show more specific topics on the field chose by user. For instance, if a user clicks on mathematics, the second page show the topics related to mathematics such as Advanced Statistics, Understanding Numbers etc. On the second page, users are asked to choose the topic they are interested in.
After choosing the specific topic on the second page related to the field chose on the main page, users are redirected to the third page which will present the courses proposed by MOOC providers related to the topic. There will be a box with a description of the topic written on it and another box to specify the name of the MOOC provider that offer this course. This third page will also show what will be learned when users will have finished the course. Also, the enrollment date of the lesson will be announced on this page. There will be the logo of the educational institution giving the course on the bottom of the page.
For example, a graduate student who wants to improve herself/ himself in the field of Portfolio Management:
- On the main page, the field named “Finance” is to be chose by user
- On the second page, the student has to choose the topic named “Investment & Portfolio Management”
- On the third page, the results will be published. The student will see the courses offered related to Portfolio Management and will be informed about the information of the courses published.
- The student will choose the Investment & Portfolio Management course organized by Rice University and published by the MOOC provider named Future Learn which is an appropriate course for her/ him.
As a result, our application redirects its users to the appropriate course through different categories. It acts as a bridge between online courses and users.
Benchmark
There are about 50 MOOC providers on the Internet. The three biggest MOOCs are the following Internet sites:
edx(https://www.edx.org)
Coursera (https://www.coursera.org)
FutureLearn(https://www.futurelearn.com)
All of them publish the courses of educational institutions online.
Non-certified programs are free, certified ones have a price. The
purpose of our service is not to create such a MOOC provider but to
gather these providers in one place.
